Solar cooking for everyone

Waterbotle heaters

Hot water is often taken for granted. So not in poor countries. Here it often means burning coal or wood to heat water. The alternative is to take advantage of the sun. A normal plastic water botle of 10 liters covered in black can be heated to about 65 degrees with a small reflector at the base. Even 60 degrees is enough for most purposes. With the 55 degrees reflector shown here, the botle will capture the sun for several hours without changing the position. The effect is constant 280-300 Watthours. In the end of the day you have hot water for most purposes. Need more than 10 l of hot water. Just add more waterbotle heaters.

I want to point out that the water is pasteurized not purified, heavy metals etc. can still be in the water. http://solarcooking.wikia.com/wiki/Water_pasteurization

To kill bacterias the most effective setup is a clear bottle. The bottle will easy get heated up to 50 degrees and the sun will do the rest. Let it rest for a couple of hours and the water is 100% purified. You can also let the sun do the purification alone, but this will take you 6 hours of sunlight. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_water_disinfection

With a bigger reflector I have reached 82 deg C before the botle started to melt down. I think 70 degrees is possible with a somewhat bigger reflector. This temperature needs only 30 minutes to purify the water. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portable_water_purification

In my case the intetion was only to heat up water take a hot shower. At 55 degrees the water is too hot for this purpose. I put it then in an isolated bag for some hours until it was time to take the shower. For my children I made a mix of hot and cold water to get a more comfortable temperature.

Hi, magnar, thanks for giving the watthours, etc. For killing off bacteria, your setup is excellent.
I think we need to think up an "aiming stick" idea so that you can aim ahead just the right amount so that you can go collect your hot water when it is at its hottest.

Hello Geoffroy
I have just put on some black tape. It is also possible to buy black cans directly from the shop. Black paint can also do.

Hi, are you just painting the outside of the bottle in black? Any paint? That would be great.
